Blogging for Dollars – How to Make Money on the Internet Doing Something You Enjoy
Almost everyone and their sister is getting on the Internet to set up their own blogs. These blogs can discuss a virtually infinite range of subjects – from fishing to recipes, from science to baking, and everything in between. It’s clear that the Internet has truly made it possible for anyone to share their lives with the entire world.
Even though blogging can be a lot fun (and quite theraputic in many cases), some people are writing blogs to actually make an impressive income from home. Armed with nothing but a computer, an Internet connection, and a bit of focused effort, these individuals are blogging all the way to the bank. Just how are they managing to do this while the vast majority of bloggers out there are not making anything?
In a nutshell, making bank from blogging requires three vital ingreidents:
Build Content and They Will Come
All blogs need to have content. Without any useful content, visitors just won’t stay on your blog to read anything. Online, content is truly king. First, consider what you would like to be blogging about. Can’t get enough rap music? Start a blog that discusses your favorite artists and their latest album releases. As you can see, blogs can be about anything under the sun, and if you make one about something you love, chances are it will not even feel like work at all!
While writing your content, don’t worry too much about perfect grammar. In most cases best not to use too much formal language and insteadwrite in a more conversational style. Not only is this easier for the visitor to read and understand, but it will also give your blog a bit of your own personality. Just write as if you were speaking to a good friend across the dinner table. Even if you don’t think of yourself a writer, you’ll find that the words flow quite easily with this technique.
When it comes to blogging platforms, Google’s Blogger or the venerable Wordpress are good options.
Attracting Visitors
The second component of the blogging formula is traffic – getting visitors to find and read the super content you’ve setup in part one. There are basically two ways to get traffic to your blog, and each has its pros and cons. Let’s look at both of these methods in turn:
Paid Traffic
This is generally done through advertising, such as banner advertising or pay-per-click. If you’ve got more money than time, this is an effective way to get traffic to your blog in a relatively short period of time. You can apply for a Google Adwords account and start bidding on keywords that relate to your blog’s subject. To help you discover keywords, you can use Google’s popular free keyword tool (https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal). To begin, try to look for keywords that are “long tail” – keywords that are being searched for, but have relatively less competition. These are generally 3-5 word phrases rather than phrases of one or two keywords. This will keep your cost per click low as you see how your blog does. While paid advertising can give you traffic very quickly, it is, of course, going to cost you some cash.
Free Traffic
The second variation is to get free traffic. This method is not going to really cost you any money, but it takes more time and effort compared to a paid traffic method. If you’re short on dough, finding out how to generate free traffic to your blog is a vital skill.
Making Money
As soon as you’ve got traffic coming to read your blog, the last task is to monetize that traffic. The best way to accomplish this is by becoming an affiliate for a pre-existing product. Websites such as Commission Junction, Linkshare, and Clickbank make it easy to talk about other people’s products and make money every time you refer a sale. Once you sign up for an account, you will gain access to a a truckload of products and services that you could be promoting on your blog.
