When you hear the term “internet marketing“, what do you think of?
For many, that term conjures thoughts of websites or spamming or search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing. For others, it’s all about graphical design, writing fancy code or even affiliate programs. All of those answers correct, but the essence of internet marketing is much simpler.

Any merchant who wants his business to succeed will find a website quite indispensable. Operation of such has, in fact, become an unwritten rule among those who want to increase their income by extending their reach and getting more people to patronize their products or services. Therefore, for a site to do its job, it has to actively participate in Internet activity – visits, forms filled out, product images downloaded, etc. Understanding the value of this Internet activity will now depend a lot on understanding the principles of search engine optimization or SEO. Again, when you want your website to do its job of bringing your business to the people, you have to market it using SEO techniques. SEO simply means increasing the likelihood that your site shows up on the first page of Google or any significant search engine when somebody searches for information about something that you offer in your site. Therefore, when it comes to making your site sell, which is it primary role, it has to be visible to people. If your SEO practices are not good enough, your site will remain in the farthest search engine listings and people won’t even know it exists. When things come down to this, you’ll want to ask the question of whether or not you still need to maintain it at all. Of course, shy away from this technology is the last thing you’ll want to do so the challenge is now to have the best website optimization plan in place and to get it to work as soon and as efficiently as possible. Getting a good ranking in the major search engines will always be a positive development. But every wise online merchant knows that even the search industry is endlessly evolving. This only means that to maintain one’s ranking, one needs to ensure that the company’s promotional and advertising campaigns are always kept up-to-date and interesting. An Internet marketer may begin by designing his material in search engine-friendly structure. Then a plan may be laid out. At all times, this plan should take into account an awareness of any changes that the search industry may be going through. What makes a good marketing plan will, however, be a case-to-case basis. For example, a low-cost, strictly online campaign that includes article writing, banner exchanges and affiliate programs, among others, may take longer to bring results. What the businessman saves on money, he spends on time. On the other hand, pay-per-click ads and other paid advertising methods will cost more but bring faster returns. There could be more ways to market through Internet but regardless of the method used, the object is only to bring traffic to the advertiser’s site. These efforts will not be significant though unless the merchant closely keeps a tab on the progress of his campaigns. This means that a website tracking system must be in place so results can be measured accurately and actual ROI or return on investment may be computed. Tracking one’s ads and other marketing efforts is important because only by knowing vital website statistics made possible by visitor tracking and monitoring of activities can a website owner understand how to best improve his campaigns.

When you market on the Internet, there’s a lot of choices you can explore. You can try article marketing, banner ads, blogging and, probably the least known, affiliate marketing. While most people recognize the first three methods mentioned, affiliate marketing may not be that much talked about although it is as commonly used. In fact, many people have generated massive income without even selling anything from their sites. So how does affiliate marketing work? A website owner will have to join a company’s affiliate program in order to take part in the process. These companies run on a larger affiliate network that allows payment to be easily coursed to different affiliate websites. When a site owner joins the program, he will be given a guideline as to how to put the links on his site and thereby begin to make money through commissions. A common example is the very popular Amazon affiliates program where an individual site owner would be authorized to sell the company’s products by putting links on his site. If somebody buys a product through the link on that site, the user makes money by getting a cut from that sale. Providers of this type of program allow their affiliates to track their commissions with sales and other data reports about the total commissions earned as per agreed period of time. If you’re thinking of making money the easy way without getting in trouble with the law, this is for you. You don’t have to worry about overhead expenses, no need to ship or mail anything. You simply have to keep those links working on your site and then you will be making money with every click that is made on every link you’ve set up. The trick is to have as many websites and affiliate partners as possible. When earnings taken from these sites are taken together, they can total to a hefty sum. Usually, payments for affiliate earnings are given monthly or quarterly through checks or other online payment options. If an affiliate’s site is earning extra big bucks, its owner will even receive a bonus from his program provider. The only downside to collecting too many links in a website, which is normally expected to generate great earnings in commissions, is when everything becomes too cluttered that the whole thing tends to backfire on the site owner – there just won’t be any clicks made. Obviously, no Internet user would sit through a mess of advertising links and this could, of course, affect affiliate performance through poor website statistics. Another not so impressive practice that many affiliates engage in is spamming people with emails to acquire sales. Providers are not very patient with these types of practices. If you’re an affiliate, you can keep track of your earnings by taking the time to know your web statistics and investing in a web traffic analyzer so you would know if your site is performing well as far as generating sales and commissions is concerned.

Now that you’ve got your site up, you’re only loving that rush of traffic you’ve been getting so far. Your marketing plan looks very effective with your hits increasing consistently. Now you think you’ve hit it bull’s eye with your fail-safe marketing strategies and consistent tracking software. The question is, is all that traffic useful? Sadly, maybe not. That’s because not all traffic will give you sales. The kind of traffic you need is the one that converts to a sale and to build up on this, you need to distinguish between good traffic and bad traffic using your statistics and a web traffic analyzer. Telling good from bad traffic begins with visitor tracking or hit counters. An ad tracking software or service will bring you more information than this such as where your visitors are located, which web pages they frequent, the length of their visit and the forms and images they download. If you know how significant analyzing your traffic is, you’ll value all this information that will be made available when you track your ads. For example, knowing where your visitors are will give you an idea how to effectively customize your services. If you’re getting very little traffic from your international or out-of-town clients, you might want to lower your shipment rates to make them more interested. In terms of Internet marketing, knowing from which search engine your visitors are will give you an idea how to adjust your strategies to perk up your ranking on the search engine where you’re presently not that successful. If you know which pages are viewed the least, you can improve their design or add more engaging content to make them perform better. If you home page rarely gets clicked, which means you barely get visitors to check out the rest of your site, then it’s clearly not doing its job. As a result, good traffic is traffic that converts into a sale while bad traffic is that which does not bring anything that the site or company it represents can benefit from. It doesn’t mean, however, that a visit that does not convert into a sale is automatically bad. One thing that may be considered is whether a visitor is there for the first time or for a specific number of times. If a first visit does not bring about a sale and is not repeated, then it’s probably bad traffic. But if a visitor has been in and out of the site without necessarily purchasing anything, it could be that he is still considering his options. This traffic obviously has good budding for turning into a sale and could, therefore, be considered good. Get to know your website statistics and invest in website optimization to boost your business performance.
